Reminder about the 10 days

In order to draw our attention to the significance of certain things, and increase our appreciation of them, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa honors objects of His creation by swearing by them in the Qur'an. Amongst these objects are the moon, the stars, the sun, the night, the day, the heavens, the earth, the dawn, and the ten nights. Allah Almighty says: "By the dawn and the ten nights..." Surat Al-Fajr 89-1, 2...

The Prophet PBUH said: "There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." They said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?" He said: "Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything." (Bukhari, 2/457)..

It is during these days, that we implement the final pillar of Islam, Hajj (the pilgrimage to Makkah). By the grace of Allah, it is close to three million people gather from everywhere of the world to answer the eternal call of Allah. People with different skin colors, speaking variable languages coming from different countries are getting united all by one thing alone: Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah, Muhammad-Ur-Rasoolullah (there is no deity but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah).

During Hajj, on the day of Arafah, Allah calls out to the angels, and points to the pilgrims saying, "(Look,) my servants have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if their sins are equivalent to the number of sand particles or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth my servants! Having forgiveness...

The Prophet PBUH said, "Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allah and abstains from marital relations (with his/her spouse), committing sins, or disputing unjustly during the Hajj, s/he will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him/her" (Bukhari, Muslim).

The Prophet PBUH said, "There are not any days that are holier than these ten days of Zhu'l-Hijjah. Therefore increase in doing good deeds to Allah, and increase in saying Allahu Akbar [Allah is Greater], and saying Alhamdulillah [all praise be to Allah], and saying Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah [there is no deity but Allah]" Reported by Al-Imam Ahmad. After hearing this, the Sahaabah, Redwaanullaahi Alayihem Ajma'een (companions of the Prophet PBUH) became so eager to say these things, that "they would shout them aloud, even in the market places" (Al-Bukhari), after the prayers, and especially after the prayers until three days after Eid (Eid-Ul-Adha, the holiday that falls on the tenth of the ten days of Zhu'l-Hijjah), "Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured," (Surat Ar-Ra'ad, 13:28)

Here are some tips which every Muslim male or female, needs for these ten days:

  • Fasting the day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years, the previous one and the coming year. (Muslim)
  • It is a day on which Allah completed the revelation of the religion, perfected this bounty bestowed upon us and was satisfied with Islam as our religion. This was mentioned in the noble Quran in Surat'l-Maa'idah, 5:3. (Bukhari and Muslim)
  • It is the day when Allah All-Mighty descends, in a manner that suits His Majesty, to the closest heaven and shows his pride to the angels about the presence of the pilgrims. (Muslim)
  • On this day Allah promises the pilgrims to bestow His mercy on them and forgive their sins so that when they return home they return free of sins just like the day when their mothers gave birth to them; a newly born baby. (Bukhari and Muslim)
  • It is a day when many people will be emancipated from the fire of Hell.

The 10th day of Zhu'l-Hijjah is one of the greatest day of the year. It is called Yawm-Un-Nahr, the day of the sacrifice, the day of Eid-ul-Adha. The Prophet PBUH said: "The best day with Allah is Yawm-Un-Nahr, the day of sacrifice and then Yawm-Ul-Qarr (the day that follows, when the pilgrims reside in the camps of Mina for worship)." (Al-Imam Ahmad & Abu Dawood)

Also, it is so important to remember that it is a Sunnah Mo'akkadah (authentic Sunnah) to attend Eid prayer in congregation and then to go for the other Sunnah of sacrifice.

  • The Prophet PBUH said, "Whoever can afford to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not approach our place for prayer." (Ahmad and Ibn Maajah; classed as Saheeh by Al-Haakim)
  • The Prophet PBUH told his daughter Fatima (Radyallaahu 'Anhaa), "Be present when your Eid sacrifice is slaughtered. Allah forgives you as the first drop of its blood comes out." (Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi' and Abdurrazzaaq in their collections of Hadeeth.)
  • The Prophet said, "Whoever made a sacrifice then Allah will forgive him an equivelance of the number of sins on the hairs of the animal." (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)
  • We should make the sacrifice after Eid prayer, NOT before, until the sunset on the 12th day of Dhu'l-Hijjah. (This is according to some jurists as there is another opinion stating that the time is extended until the sunset of the 13th day.). Also, we should eat from that meat and thank Allah for his abundance...
  • An animal suffices for one person, but a cow or camel suffices for seven people.
  • Meat should be divided among the self, family, friends, and the poor.
  • The one who will be sacrificing the animal should avoid clipping nails, and cutting/shaving hair for the ten days...
  • Allah Almighty says: "It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches him. Thus, we have made them subject to you that you may magnify Allah for his guidance to you..." Surat Al-Hajj 22-37

During these days and after, we need to consider taking the most and best of the opportunity that Allah is giving to us not only by worship and extra worship, but also by working on ourselves and our shortcomings, by improving our Muslim qualities and by fulfilling our promises and covenants with Allah Azza Wa Jall.. It's time to be up to the challenges facing all of us and the whole Ummah of Islam..!!

Oh Allah! Send your blessings upon Muhammad PBUH and upon the family of Muhammad PBUH, as you have sent your blessings upon Ibrahim PBUH and upon the family of Ibrahim, PBUH. Indeed, you are praiseworthy and glorious.

This year the day of Arafah will insha Allah fall on

Thursday, August 31 2017.
