The First Seminar on Culture, Identity, Body Image and Fashion by Shaikh Saad Tasleem April 27 - 29

The First Seminar on Culture, Identity, Body Image and Fashion

It’s one of the most polarizing trends to hit our communities

The search for Muslim representation in Western mainstream (sports, media, and fashion runways) split us down the middle. While some make dangerous compromises, others mistakenly hold on to a vague notion of “Muslim tradition”.  It’s time we find clarity and the healthy balance on self-expression.

Every day is a new controversy, but the underlying questions are the same.
What are Islamic guidelines on hair and dress?
Is there such a thing as “Muslim culture”?
What does “imitating non-Muslims” really mean?
Does being “trendy” contradict with Islamic concept of modesty?
Am I a bad Muslim for being into fashion?

Shaykh Saad Tasleem is a fresh addition to the AlMaghrib instructor lineup. As one of our youngest instructors born and raised in the USA, Shaykh Saad is highly in tune with today’s youth struggles and pressures, while grounded with education in traditional Islamic Sciences.

In his early years, Shaykh Saad tasted the alternative life as the lead singer of a punk rock band. Moving on from that lifestyle, Shaykh Saad still skateboards, snowboards, and rocks his Converse sneakers. After studying Art History, Modern Art, Graphic Design, and Psychology at the University of Maryland, he decided to take his life in a brand new direction.

Shaykh Saad started Islamic education at IIASA in Fairfax, VA. He then went on to study at the Islamic University of Madinah where he dedicated himself to the study of Islamic Sciences. He graduated with a Bachelor’s from the Faculty of Islamic Law, University of Madinah.

Today, Shaykh Saad dedicates his teaching to Muslim youth learning to balance their Western lifestyles with Islamic values.
